Fuel pills, capsules and additives may be the hottest product today in Network Marketing. Claims of 30% better fuel economy have driven the sales and sign ups of these companies into a frenzy. But with the claims, comes controversy.
Bioperformance: I first heard about Bioperformance in December of 2005 when I wrote about a press release that claimed 35% better fuel economy if you put a green pill in your gas tank when you filled up.
In the following 4 months, Bioperformance gained momentum and was growing at a frenzied pace with sales of $9 Million and 20,000 distributor sign ups. Two months later in May, I saw another press release that claimed Bioperformance had sales of over $25 Million in it's first 6 months, making it the fastest growing Network Marketing company in the industry.
The Wheels Come Off
On May 17th, I received a tip from a reader that led me to the web site of the Texas Attorney General. There I found a press release:
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott today filed a lawsuit and obtained a temporary restraining order and asset freeze against Texas-based BioPerformance Inc. The company, organized as an illegal pyramid scheme, markets a fuel pill it falsely claims will boost gas mileage and save consumers money.
I predicted that the Bioperformance folks would claim that big oil and liberal media were out to get them and that they would attempt to rally the distributors in an "us vs. the world" fashion.
My prediction came true the very next day when Lowell Mims, of Bioperformance posted the following on their web site:
We are right now working with OUR Attorneys to vigourously defend OUR Company. Over the next few days you will be hearing and seeing some negative press. When you are successful in your industry a lot of people take shots at you because they want to obtain the success that the BioPerformance family has created. Just like Amway, Herbalife and Mary Kay we will come out of this challenge stronger than ever!
Immediate Outlook
I have built a pretty good friendship with a Bioperformance regional manager, even giving him a couple of leads that came across my desk, but my immediate recommendation is to stay away from Bioperformance. If they win their fight against the Attorney General, than it might be worth a second look. MLM has enough of a reputation to deal with. You don't need the added pressure of explaining why your company is shut down in Texas.
