Home Party Success Story

The Vail Trail:
While splitting her time between cocktail waitressing and being a wholesale clothing representative in L.A., Dozier threw a life-altering party. “I wanted to make some extra money one weekend and I did a sample sale party and made more money than I made all week,” she said. “So I quit.”

Dozier, who had moved to California to study interior design at a college in Long Beach, started hosting clothing sales everywhere, she said. From people’s homes to movie and TV show sets, production offices and at school fundraisers – “I have no ego when it comes to where I sell, I’ve even sold out of the bathroom at the Metro Transit Center in Los Angeles,” she said, laughing.

After a stint as a “Hollywood wife,” and her subsequent divorce, Dozier moved to Vail, a place she used to come on vacation. It was 2001 and she came to the valley with with two goals: to take a break, and to “get forward in my skis.” She started bartending at Larkspur and after six months, decided that returning to California was no longer an option. When she saw an article on the Minturn Market in the paper, she decided that Vail might be the perfect spot to start up her clothing business again, especially because of a hole she saw in the market.

“(My clothes are) not Wal-Mart and not the high-end stores,” but somewhere in the middle and still affordable, she said. What started as a side business to make extra money quickly evolved into a full-time job, Dozier said.

“I took pictures of clothes out of my own closet and said, this is the kind of clothing we sell. I got in (to the Market) temporarily and it’s been huge ever since.”

The best part of her job, Dozier said, is dressing the woman with low self-esteem and making them feel good – “then I’m a star,” she said.

And the worst? “The schlepping. I’m a constant mover because I have to pack two racks, five garment bags and five hockey bags full of stuff,” she said. “My job isn’t glamorous but it beats the 9-5 grind. I hate a set schedule. After I talked to you this afternoon, I took a nap. I love that.”
